How to choose your baby’s first shoes!

Let's be honest, itty bitty baby shoes are the cutest thing ever. However, they aren't there to just serve as a fashion statement. You want to ensure the shoes provide the right amount of support, flexibility, and comfort for your child's developing feet. Barefoot is typically recommended as babies are learning to walk to help the feet develop necessary muscle strength, bone formation, and balance. However, shoes are very appropriate once kids are walking and running around outside.

Here are some important factors to consider when shopping for your child's first shoes for children who are typically developing:

  • Flexible Soles

    • The soles of your child's shoes should be flexible enough to allow for natural movement and flexibility of the foot. Stiff soles can hinder proper development and cause discomfort for your child. A flexible sole will allow your child to grip the ground as they learn to walk and maintain their balance.

  • Velcro Straps

  • Velcro straps are such a helpful feature for first shoes. They allow for quick and easy adjustments, making it easier to put the shoes on and take them off. Velcro straps also ensure a secure fit, preventing your child's shoes from slipping off or becoming loose while they are walking.

  • Wide Toe Box

    • Your child's shoes should have a wide toe box to allow their toes to wiggle and move freely. This will help with proper foot and joint development, and prevent any discomfort caused by cramped toes. A shoe with a narrow toe box can cause blisters, calluses, and other foot problems.

  • Firm Heel Cup

    • A relatively firm heel cup provides support for your child's developing foot. It helps to stabilize the foot and prevent any rolling or twisting. A good heel cup will also promote proper alignment of the foot, helping to prevent injuries.

  • Good Tread

    • Shoes with good tread will provide the necessary grip to help prevent slipping, especially on slick or uneven surfaces (driveway, steps, grass). Look for shoes with a non-slip sole to ensure your child stays safe while exploring their environment.

  • Breathable Materials

    • Shoes made from breathable materials such as leather or mesh will allow air to circulate, preventing the buildup of moisture and reducing the risk of fungal infections. Avoid shoes made from synthetic materials as they can cause your child's feet to sweat, leading to discomfort and odor.

PRO TIP:
Buy a shoe with a loop on the heel to help easily get shoes on and off squirmy babies or toddlers!

Selecting the right shoes for your infant or toddler is essential for their proper foot development and overall comfort. Look for shoes with flexible soles, velcro straps, a wide toe box, a firm heel cup, good tread, and made from breathable materials. Properly fitting shoes will provide the necessary support and promote healthy foot development as your child learns to walk and explore their world.
